Abstract
Aged helmets were tested to evaluate their damping capacity and resistance to penetration according to DIN 4840. These tests did not furnish reliable information on the safety function of aged safety helmets. It is recommended to add the following safety requirement to the DIN 4840-requirements concerning resistance to penetration: Apart from the damage caused to the point of impact itself, no material- disintegrating cracks shall ensure from the impact of the test cone. Helmets made of thermoplastic plastics are the most frequently sold on the market. Users should note that the crackling test or changes in the colour of the helmet may give - at least approximate - but easily achievable information on the safety function of a helmet.
