Abstract
Some 4 000 shift-related measurements of the exposure to diesel engine emissions in surface and underground workplaces are presented. The study considers the fields of warehouse and loading work, shipping and transport within enterprises, repair and maintenance, bench tests, maintenance workshops, non-rail vehicles below ground (excluding coal mining), and underground construction work. The 50 % and 90 % values for elementary carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC), respectively, for exposure over the period from 1994 to 2000 are presented. The TC exposure values for the 1990 to 1993 period are compared with the figures from 1994 to 2000. The relationship between the EC to TC values for the different workplace environments is also evaluated.
