Abstract
Industrial safety helmets may be subject to ageing processes during their use. Such processes cause deterioration in the helmets' mechanical strength and therefore in their protective function. Studies conducted on helmets exposed to the elements whilst in service show their service life to be dependent upon the material of the helmet shell. A service life of four years is recommended for thermoplastic materials, and of eight years for thermoset materials. Should industrial safety helmets exhibit visible damage or suffer impact, they must be replaced immediately. The recommendations for the service life have been added to BG Rule BGR 193. These recommended periods begin from the date of manufacture stamped on the helmet shell.
