Abstract
The GESTIS substance database currently contains information on almost 8,000 substances. The substance data sheets contain detailed information for identification and characterization of the substances, comprehensive physical and chemical data, possible hazardous chemical reactions, comprehensive information for occupational medicine (intake routes, modes of action), information on first aid and on the safe handling of hazardous substances (e.g. safety measures, dangerous incident, disposal), and the regulations governing the hazardous substance in question. An overview can thus be obtained quickly of the current hazard classifications, workplace limit values, transport classifications, water hazard class, and numerous other provisions. The database is extended and updated continually. Changes to classifications, limit values or other bodies of regulations are recorded promptly, and the OH&S data adjusted to the regulations. The GESTIS substance database can be accessed over the Internet. Access is free of charge and is unrestricted. A password is not required. The Internet addresses are www.hvbg.de/bgia/gestis-database for the English version and www.hvbg.de/bgia/stoffdatenbank for the German version. Once the database has been accessed, functions are available by which searches can be performed by substance name, CAS number, EU number, index number, or UN number. Full-text searches can also be performed for any term. The information provided by the GESTIS substance database is presented and its key aspects explained. Personal protective equipment employed during tasks involving dichloromethane serves as an example.
