Abstract
The Institute of Casting Technology (IfG) in Düsseldorf and the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) in Sankt Augustin conducted a joint study in order to ascertain what organic pyrolysis products may be released from mould materials in foundries during casting. For this purpose, standardized casting tests were performed in a pilot facility at the IfG on the most significant common moulded material systems. The emitted pyrolysis gases were collected by means of various sampling systems, and analysed at the IFA. The present paper describes basic principles of casting technology, the arrangement for the tests and their performance, and the results of the project. The article also summarizes a supplementary evaluation of the MEGA exposure database on hazardous substances emitted during casting.
