Abstract
Occupational disease BK 1301 "Mucosal changes, cancer or other neoplasms of the urinary tract caused by aromatic amines" also covers diseases from exposure to carcinogenic azo dyes. In the case of historically used dyes identified in determination proceedings for occupational diseases, it is not often clear whether these are azo dyes capable of releasing carcinogenic aromatic amines. Twenty-two historic dyes of a colour sample catalogue of Farbenfabrik Wolfen (1960s) have therefore been analysed for releasable carcinogenic amines by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry after reductive azo decomposition with dithionite and with stannous chloride/hydrochloric acid. For eleven dyes whose structure was known, the structure-related release or non-release of carcinogenic amines has been confirmed. A further nine dyes could be classified as distinctly carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic by analysis. Two dyes are not amenable to distinct classification.
