Abstract
The view at the development of the occupational hearing impairment in the German industry reveals that noise is still a serious problem - in spite of the large efforts in the field of noise abatement and hearing protection in the past which have been effective. In the European Union about 300 types of hearing protectors are available on the market. For nearly all activities a satisfying selection is possible. Hearing protectors shall protect against hazards caused by noise; but often the hearing protector itself is a burden to the user. Annoyance, added difficulty of work and irritability caused by the hearing protector lead to user's refusal of the protector. Therefore a proper selection of hearing protectors is very important because only a protector that is worn during the entire exposure is protecting the hearing.
