Abstract
Metals and metal compounds are generally present in workplace atmospheres in the form of dusts or aerosol droplets. The dusts/aerosols are recovered on filters and examined for hazardous substances relevant to workplaces. Methods employed for this purpose generally determine the content of the individual metals, as the differentiation by bond type or solubility frequently required for toxicological purposes is generally possible only by highly complex analysis, if at all. Proven preparation methods used in occupational health and safety for measurement of soluble metal compounds and the total metal content in dusts are described.
